The Trinidad and Tobago Film Company Limited (FilmTT), in partnership with Hyphen8, and in collaboration with TTT Limited, UTT and SGP Studios, proudly announces the successful completion of a two-week immersive actors’ workshop, aimed at enhancing participants’ skills in voice training and acting for the screen and theatre.
The workshop culminated in a Showcase, where participants had the opportunity to display the valuable techniques and knowledge acquired during the program.
The workshop, held from January 15th to 28th brought together aspiring actors and industry professionals in a dynamic and immersive learning environment. Participants delved into various aspects of acting, with a special emphasis on refining vocal techniques and mastering the art of performing for both screen and theatre. The workshop was split into adults, of which 35 persons participated and Youth (under 18 years) of which there were 15 participants.
Key highlights of the workshop included:
Screen and Theatre Acting Techniques: The workshop covered a wide array of acting techniques tailored for both the screen and theatre. Participants explored the differences between the two mediums and learned how to adapt their performances accordingly. Leading the Acting Techniques and Movement Class was Greta Mendez, a Performance Art Artist; Theatre and Movement Director; Dance and Drama Tutor; Carnivalist; and Producer. She has worked in the UK, Greece, Italy China, India, Kashmir and T&T. Mendez has also worked with some of the leading young actors today including John Boyega, Letitia Wright, Malachi Kirby and many more.
The Screen acting class, which delved into the Meisner technique, script analysis, understanding and embodying character and accessing emotion, was facilitated by Director, Agent and Acting Coach Darren Gordon. Gordon has, and continues to, work with an ever-increasing number of high-profile clients and industry professionals. In 2020, he became a full-time agent and has overseen members of his cohort to secure significant roles in major productions.
Voice Training Excellence: Renowned voice coach Andrea Encinas led sessions focused on vocal control, projection, and the nuances of effective communication through speech. Participants gained valuable insights into harnessing the power of their voices for impactful performances. Ms. Encinas is recognized as one of the pioneers of British Gospel Music and co-founder of the London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC).
Practical Application: Through hands-on exercises, scene studies, and practical demonstrations, participants had the opportunity to apply the theories and techniques learned during the workshop. This approach ensured a well-rounded and experiential learning process.
Special Guest Masterclass: on Saturday January 20th, the participants received an exclusive Masterclass with actor Denim Richards where he talked about the reality of Hollywood and what it takes to survive as an actor. Richards has been performing for over two decades with numerous TV, film and musical theatre credits under his belt. He is currently acting alongside Kevin Costner in the hit Paramount Network series, “Yellowstone”. Additionally, Richards can be seen on the Netflix feature film “The Chainsaw Rancher”.
Speaking at Media Meet and Greet, Richards shared, “Yes acting is great, it’s fun, but it’s a business first. And in order to get in front of the camera you have to understand how that business works. Through this workshop, FilmTT and Hypen8 are trying to create something that is sustainable. We want to give you the best of the best and in order to do that we need to get the information and having these types of Masterclasses is a big discovery session to drive us all in the right direction.”
The grand finale of the two-week workshop was the Showcase, where participants presented an excerpt from Athol Fugard’s “The Island”, a modern classic that celebrates hope, passion and the strength of friendship. The performance showcased their newfound skills and confidence. The event provided a platform for the participants to demonstrate their growth as actors before an audience of facilitators, family and friends.
Leslie Ann Wills-Caton, General Manager at FilmTT, expressed enthusiasm about the success of the workshop, stating, “We are thrilled to witness the incredible growth and development of the participants over the past two weeks.
