The First Citizens National Poetry Slam (FCNPS) is already generating significant excitement, as poets turned out in full force for auditions held at the National Library in Port of Spain on Saturday 15 and at Boba & Brew in Marabella on Sunday 16 February.

The event highlighted a mix of emerging talent, seasoned veterans, and a few familiar faces eager to reclaim their place in the competition after a lengthy hiatus. With each performance, judges were treated to thought-provoking poetry that delivered a taste of the powerful artistry and expression the Slam is known for.

For those still seeking a chance to come up against reigning champion Shakira Burton, who will be defending her title, the final two audition dates are fast approaching:

  • Friday 21 February at East Yard, 27 Prince Street, Arima, from 5.30 pm to 8 pm
  • Sunday 23 February at the Scarborough Public Library, Tobago, from 10 am to 2 pm

The panel of judges who have the unenviable task of determining the semi-finalists are: Areille John, Head Judge, Richard ‘Chromatics’ Rajkumar, Nicholas Sosa, Patti-Anne Ali and Yvan Mendoza. The FCNPS is the grand finale of the Bocas Lit Fest, one of the most exciting events on the Caribbean literary calendar, which will mark its 15th year in 2025. Running from 1 to 4 May, the festival will also celebrate 15 years of the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature, and the extraordinary literary voices shaping our culture.

More than just a competition, the First Citizens National Poetry Slam has become a cultural powerhouse — a stage for poets to confront pressing societal issues, share personal narratives, and engage audiences with powerful spoken word performances.
