DJ Mario Russell’s Music Reviews: What’s new and trending?
This week on the music scene, Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons have released EP’s or extended play compilations containing four tracks each.
Bunji’s tracks are 1. Enemies, 2. Beach & Fun, 3. Island Vibe and 4. Pop Champagne.
Fay-Ann tracks are 1. No Behaviour, 2. Over You, 3. Island Girl and 4. When We Grow Up.
It seems like Bunji and Fayann are after new markets. The tracks on their EP compilations are slow-paced yet trendy with pulsating hip-hop riddims. Fay-Ann production is called, “The HuU Project: Human Unlimited” while Bunji’s Ep title is 4. We anticipate the release of the videos which can take these songs to higher levels.
Trinidadian-born rapper Nicki Minaj debuts at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Super Freaky Girl”. The intro starts with a sample of Rick James’s 1981 hit “Super Freak. Throughout the song, the Super Freak melody can be heard in a hip-hop style. Nicki’s forceful rap lyrics turn this classic into a monster hit. It is her third career number one song, but shockingly it is her first solo unaccompanied number one hit.
Viking Ding Dong has released a video to his latest song “Good Fete” on the Hot Sun Riddim. The video is about energetic masqueraders on board a boat having fun and partying in the middle of the ocean. Already the song is gaining international appeal and has reached 10,000 views on YouTube.
Nailah Blackman – “Best Friend”. Written by: Nailah Blackman, Mical Teja, Kitwanna Israel, Anson Soverall,
“Best Friend” is a slow crossover track with the guitar as the main lead. The intro and outro have a chant “oh,oh,oh,oh,oh”.The chorus “Anything for my best friend, I’ll be right there, I’ll be”. The song already has 20k views on YouTube. The perfect song to change the mood at a party and I can’t wait to see Nailah perform this song.
Chuck Gordon has released a new track called “Mas in Tobago” for the upcoming festival. The scintillating, rhythmic “Mas in Tobago” was composed by Ronald Forde, produced by Jueilo Nelson of “Juelio Productionz”, and performed by two (2) time National Calypso Monarch Chuck Gordon.
