Calypso stands as one of the earliest genres of music to be recorded in English in the Western Hemisphere, fusing intricate rhyming schemes, vivid storytelling, and socially relevant lyrics. These elements gave Calypso a distinctive edge over other late 19th-century styles such as blues and vaudeville. Over the decades, Calypso’s infectious spirit and rhythmic depth laid the groundwork for an array of global music genres, from reggae and soca to rap and hip-hop. Now, a new chapter begins. On Sunday, September 7th, the lush Pueblo El Pao Estate in Santa Cruz will host the official launch of Kalypso, a modern reimagining of Calypso, crafted by acclaimed producer and visionary Kitwana Israel in collaboration with Advokit Productions. After years in the making, this refined soundscape marks the genesis of a new musical era, proudly rooted in Caribbean tradition yet designed for today’s global stage.

“The time for us to claim our sound and officially register our brand is long overdue,” says Israel. “I’m doing my part to help fulfill our collective destiny, and I hope industry leaders will rise to the occasion. Together we can represent a unified culture ready to take its place on the world stage.” Calypso’s journey began as a form of resistance and storytelling among enslaved Africans in the early 20th century. By 1912 and 1914, early recordings were already capturing its unique energy. As the genre spread throughout the Caribbean and beyond, its influence flourished even as Calypso itself became increasingly overlooked in modern times. “Despite its profound influence, Calypso is largely absent from current charts and digital platforms, even here at home,” Israel laments. “It’s time to bring it back to the forefront, evolved and revitalized.”

Kalypso is more than music. It is a complete cultural expression. The event’s theme, Black Dandyism, is a celebration of identity and resistance through fashion, paying homage to the genre’s visual flair. The fashion segment will feature some of the region’s top designers. Ecliff Elie explores bold new directions with the theme. Christian Boucaud returns to the runway with her first post-pandemic collection. Ryan Chan brings his signature energy to the Kalypso aesthetic. Naballah Chi, fresh off her win at the First Citizens “Banking in Style” show, and the internationally acclaimed Aaron Moneer round out a powerful cast. This celebration, titled Kalypso: The Luxe Launch – A Cultural Renaissance in Black, Gold and Global Sound, is co-produced by ET&T Magazine, Overtime Media, Advokit Productions, and Pixel Perfect Media. As Israel explains, “This isn’t just another fete or fashion show. It’s a cultural movement, rooted in rhythm and storytelling, designed to honor our past while setting the tone for Carnival 2026 and beyond.” Limited tickets are available via committee members, at Cache stores nationwide, and online at islandetickets.com.
