Visit the UWI Alma Jordan Library to view the exhibition LOOKING ACROSS. This show – which opens today – is organised by The UWI Faculty of Humanities and Education in celebration of Trinidadian novelist, playwright, poet and short story writer Earl Lovelace’s 90th birthday.

The exhibition curated by Dr. Marsha Pearce.

The exhibition features new paintings by graduates of The UWI Visual Arts degree programme. Each artist has responded to one of Lovelace’s novels.

Timothy Somai offers a visual translation of environment and perspective in Lovelace’s first novel While Gods Are Falling (published 1965).

Salisha Stanley draws inspiration from a scene in Lovelace’s second novel The Schoolmaster (published 1968).

Shania Warris portrays the characters and symbolism found in Lovelace’s third novel The Dragon Can’t Dance (published 1979).

Sarah Knights shares her interpretation of human emotions expressed in Lovelace’s fourth novel The Wine of Astonishment (published 1982).

Accompanying the paintings is a display of Lovelace’s various book covers.

The Exhibition runs from July 7-30, 2025.

Free and open to the public at The UWI Alma Jordan Library, Ground Floor.

Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm.
