Expressions is the theme of artist Laura Nicole’s upcoming exhibition at the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago, Federation Park, St James.

The exhibition will open on October 8.

“My wish is for everyone who attends to immerse themselves in the work,” said the artist, who does not use her last name Simonette for her art.

“These are evocative pieces that reflect my artistic evolution.”

A former art teacher at East Mucurapo Secondary School, Laura Nicole is an alumna of The University of the West Indies, St Augustine as well as the Camden School of Art and the University of Westminster – both in England.

Her creative journey goes back to 1994, when her inaugural exhibition showcased the fusion of batik on fabric and clothing. Her dedication to textured work is a creative exploration that was ignited when her father became partially blind.

Since her debut solo exhibition in 2015, with her work on canvas, Laura Nicole has been enriched by local artists Andy Jacob, Embah, Gregory Williams, Garvin Pierre, Glen Roopchand and Jason Hospedales.

She has participated in the group exhibition, “Artists in Harmony” in February 2023, displayed at the Art Society. Her work was also displayed earlier this year at the Art Lime Gallery.

With this upcoming collection, Laura Nicole will draw inspiration from Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.

Her canvas is imbued with vibrant hues and textured strokes, influenced not only by the Afro-centric art collection and clothing designs of her mother, but also by the avant-garde spirit of Jackson Pollock.

“Expressions” will run until October 12.
