I Was Walking is an riveting exploration of dance and physical theatre produced by renowned T&T choreographer Dave Williams.
A collection of old and debut works, the show is on stage at the Queen’s Hall on August 4th and 5th, 2023. Among other choreographic themes, the show also explores the vestiges of the Transatlantic slave trade and attempts to propose artistic solutions to the colonial debt.
The work is a journey into Williams’ gratitude for the freedom to move and create. This is also reflected in the show’s title, “I Was Walking”, which speaks of the choreographer’s evolution of artistic expression and our collective walk towards maturing freedoms.
As we celebrate Emancipation, the performances take on a particular resonance in seeking to illuminate and humanize the loudening historical conversation around the legacy of the Transatlantic slave trade.
The innovative and thought-provoking show addresses the timely and poignant issues of reparations and the negative and far-reaching impacts of slavery. In a daring move, Williams will attempt to withhold copyright fees from artists and citizens from nations historically identified as purveyors and beneficiaries of colonialism. This symbolic gesture attempts to provoke thought and spark a much-needed conversation around our perceived agency in the broader reparations movement.
“This is our way of contributing to the ongoing global reparations and justice dialogue.” Williams clarifies, “Reparation and copyright are deeply evocative and nuanced discussions with profound legal implications, which we don’t take lightly. In that regard, we have begun contacting the artists and copyright holders to request a waiver of fees and permission to use their music for two days. We are currently awaiting word.”
In conjunction with the performance, a series of workshops will also delve into the concepts of reparation, freedom, and the transformative power of dance. These sessions allow deeper engagement with the themes presented on stage and encourage a more informed, active participation in the ongoing dialogue.
