Aspiring authors will have a valuable opportunity in August 2024 to master the art of writing for the 9 to 12 age group, with a three-part virtual workshop presented by the Bocas Lit Fest.

Led by award-winning authors Carol Mitchell and Danielle Y.C. McClean, winner of the 2022 Bocas Lit Fest Children’s Book Prize, “Tween Tales” will offer in-depth guidance on developing captivating characters and plots aimed at pre-teens readers, plus practical tips for navigating the publication process.

The masterclass runs over three consecutive Fridays, on 9, 16, and 23 August, via Zoom.

The masterclass will provide insights into the reading preferences of “tween” readers, showing participants how to skilfully blend humour, emotion, and meaningful themes to craft stories that genuinely connect with this age group. In addition to writing techniques, the sessions will offer valuable insights into marketing books, including building an author platform and implementing effective promotional strategies.

The sessions will particularly benefit intermediate to advanced emerging writers, who either have a work in progress in need of refinement, or who want to explore the unique aspects of writing for the 9 to 12 age group.

The fee for the masterclass, covering all three sessions, is TT$900, and participants must register and pay in advance via the Bocas Lit Fest website.

Participants are encouraged, though not required, to submit a 100-word book idea and a writing sample of up to 500 words by Tuesday 6 August to workshops@bocaslitfest.com.
