Sundiata always keeps it fresh: This notably multi-talented artist is constantly staging exhibitions of recently-created works and, as one can tell from its title, ‘Sundiata: Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures, 2018-2022’, this month’s show, from September 17-25, will be no different from his previous events.

Composition, colour and space are primary concerns for him and these elements can be especially witnessed in the Carnival scenes and architectural depictions that will be among the exhibits. Known for his understanding of light, Sundiata relies on nature ‘to be the grounding, the source of most ideas’. He is also driven by the interaction with human beings and objects, with his market scene painting being a perfect example.

His talent across a variety of mediums is renowned. Alongside his oil and watercolour paintings and hard wood sculptures, Sundiata has gradually immersed himself more and more within his sketches in pencil and charcoal-represented by some of the nudes on tap-and he has embraced the challenge and has believed that this process has allowed him to develop as an artist.

This is all very interesting when one considers Sundiata’s background. Born in Barbados on April 21, 1950 as Winston Ian Stewart, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) degree from the University of Reading in England and also managed to work his way to a BSc in Economics from he University of the West Indies, St Augustine.

‘Sundiata: Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures, 2018-2022’ officially comes off from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18. The rest of schedule is as follows: September 20-23, noon – 6 p.m.; September 24 and 25, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

There will also be two days of previews-September 15 and 16, noon to 6 p.m.-that will immediately precede the main exhibition and are geared towards potential buyers who desire privacy as they get an early look at what is in store. Bookings for the previews can be made by contacting the 101 Art Gallery’s Mark Pereira at 6780460 or Dulcie Nieves at 686-7943.
