Dancehall music and culture was described and defined recently by Jamaican superstar, Buju Banton (Mark Myrie) on the mega popular “Drink Champs” program as “where the younger people express themselves, we get more sexualized and we get more slangs and different types of dances than Reggae”.
This was most evident in Trinidad and Tobago recently, as CKL Promotions, Purple Robe Entertainment and Ultimate Promotions hosted the Magnum Xplosion SummerStageTT concert at The Paddock, Queen’s Park Savannah. From 9 pm, Dancehall music lovers assembled to enjoy a night of expression, fun, dancing, slangs, Magnum Tonic Wine and endless interactions with their favorite artistes.
Local performers, KESI, Kid Volt, Tempa and Squid opened up the live action onstage with spirited routines, dancers accompanying them and calls to action with the rapidly increasing audience. Then came the Jamaican contingent, with Rajah Wild, Kraff and 10Tik exciting the gathering and leading the way for the @Manhimselff, Alkaline and coming thereafter to close the night’s activities was the Poor People’s Governor, Bounty Killer.
