XVIBES-JC

At The XVibes, we’re all about spotlighting the pulse of Caribbean culture—and Tobago’s Carnival is standing out on the regional calendar. As the island prepares to unleash its unique flavor of revelry, we caught up with Dexter Sandy, president of the Iconic Mas J’ouvert and mas band, one of the bands leading the charge with bold themes, inclusive vibes, and unforgettable experiences. This year’s presentation, Tropical Bliss, is more than just a costume line it’s a full-on celebration of Tobago’s beauty, rhythm, and spirit. Let’s dive into the heart of what makes Iconic Mas a must-watch this Carnival season.
Q: “Tropical Bliss” is such a vibrant theme—what inspired the concept behind this year’s presentation from Iconic Mas?
A: The idea of Tropical Bliss comes directly from the beauty and vibrancy of Tobago itself. We wanted to reflect the island’s natural landscapes, its rhythm, and its carefree energy in a way that feels refreshing and exciting for masqueraders. It’s a celebration of color, culture, and the joy that Carnival brings to people’s lives.
Q: With the costume launch just weeks away, what can masqueraders expect in terms of design, inclusivity, and overall experience?
A: Our costumes have already been launched, and we promised masqueraders bold designs that balance creativity with comfort—and we delivered! Our focus is on ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, size, or background, feels welcome and celebrated in Iconic Mas. Beyond the costumes, the full experience includes premium service, memorable vibes, and a band that truly feels like family.
Q: Iconic Mas is quickly becoming a staple in Tobago’s Carnival scene. How has the brand evolved since its inception, and what sets it apart?
A: From the start, Iconic Mas has been about more than costumes—it’s about creating an experience that resonates. Over time, we’ve refined our approach to combine professional production with strong community roots. What sets us apart is our commitment to quality, our innovative design, and the way we position Tobago as a unique Carnival destination.
Q: You’ve spoken about Tobago’s affordability, safety, and scenery. How do these elements influence your band’s offerings and planning?
A: These elements shape everything we do. Tobago offers a Carnival experience that is world-class yet accessible. We plan our packages and events to highlight that. Affordability allows more people to join in, safety gives masqueraders peace of mind, and the scenery creates a natural stage that elevates the entire road experience.
Q: Marketing a Carnival band isn’t easy, especially in a growing space like Tobago’s October Carnival. What strategies have worked best for Iconic Mas?
A: Consistency and authenticity have been key. We engage with people year-round—not just during the season—and use storytelling to showcase the beauty of Tobago and the energy of our band. Social media has been essential, but building real relationships with our supporters on the ground matters just as much. Through Iconic events, we also extend our excellence in mas into excellence in signature events.
Q: What’s the vibe like on the ground in Tobago as the Carnival season approaches? Are you seeing increased interest from regional or international masqueraders?
A: The energy is definitely building. Locally, there’s a lot of excitement, and regionally we’re seeing more inquiries and sign-ups. International masqueraders are also showing strong interest, drawn by the unique appeal of Tobago’s Carnival—it’s intimate, safe, and beautifully scenic. This year, Iconic Mas will host the most international masqueraders we’ve ever had.
Q: Tobago’s scenic route is often praised—how does that setting enhance the masquerade experience, especially for first-timers?
A: It’s truly special. Imagine dancing in your costume with the sea on one side, hills in the background, and the warmth of the people all around you. That backdrop makes the experience unforgettable—especially for first-timers who are seeing Tobago’s beauty and Carnival’s vibrancy come together for the first time.
Q: What has the collaboration process been like with local authorities, tourism stakeholders, and other bands in preparing for the festival?
A: Collaboration has been positive. There’s a shared understanding that Tobago Carnival is still growing, so working together is essential. From logistics and safety to promotions and cultural programming, everyone has a role to play in ensuring the festival reaches its full potential.
Q: Beyond the road experience, what else can masqueraders and visitors expect from Iconic Mas in terms of community, culture, or events?
A: We always aim to create a holistic experience. That means community engagement, cultural tie-ins, and opportunities to connect outside the road. Whether it’s through pre-events, partnerships with local creatives, or simply making masqueraders feel at home, we believe the journey with Iconic Mas starts before Carnival and continues after.
Q: For those still deciding whether to play mas in Tobago, what would you say to convince them that Iconic Mas is the band to join?
A: Iconic Mas offers the perfect balance of vibes, professionalism, and Tobago charm. If you want an experience where you’re taken care of, where you feel part of something bigger, and where the energy is unmatched, you’ll find it with us. We’re not just a band; we’re a community—and we welcome everyone.
