The island of Dominica located in the lesser Antilles between the French Islands of Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south.

It covers an area of approximately 751 square kilometres and its terrain is rugged and mountainous. It is called “the hiking capital of the Caribbean” and also “the Nature Isle of the Caribbean”. Dominicans say there is a river to explore for everyday of the year. It is a haven for ecotourism and outdoor activities such a hiking, birdwatching and diving. 

Dominica itself is predominantly composed of volcanic rocks. It has a complex geology with a variety of volcanic features including stratovolcanoes, lava domes, pyroclastic deposits, hot springs and furmaroles. The island ‘s topography is best described by rugged mountain ranges, deep valleys and steep cliffs.

MORNE DIABLOTINS

The highest peak in Dominica is Morne Diablotins reaching an elevation of 1447 metres or 4747 feet. It is an extinct stratovolcano located in the norther part of the island. The trek to the summit is challenging and the trail passes through rainforest, montane forest and elfin woodland. The summit is heavily covered with mountain mangrove and to get there one has to make their way escalating the short tree branches. At the top hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

MORNE TROIS PITONS

Another notable peak in Dominica is Morne Trois Pitons located in the southern part of Dominica. It reaches an elevation of 1372 metres or 4501 feet. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the park is known for its geothermal features, lush rainforest and natural wonders. Nestled within the rainforest of Morne Trois Pitons is a volcanic crater called Boiling Lake. It is the number one tourist attraction for hikers in Dominic. The trail passes through a stunning scenery of lush valleys, towering mountains and volcanic features know as ‘The Valley of Desolation’. The 3-4hr hike to get there is steep, and requires a good level of fitness. The lake meaures approximately 60 metres or 200 fåeet in diameter and it’s depths can vary reaching up to 6 metres(20 feet) in some areas. The water temperature of Boiling Lake is estimated to be around 82-92 degrees Celsius or 180-190 degrees Fahrenheit making it too hot for bathing. The water from the lake has a unique turquoise colour and smells of surphur fumes. The mist and steam that rises from the lake add to the dramatic and mystical atmosphere. At the start of the Boling Lake hike there is the Titou Gorge which is Creole for ‘little Throat Hole”. Swimming inside the gorge to the waterfall is 60 yards and there are ledges where you can rest. The water from the gorge comes from Fresh Water lake.

BOERI LAKE AND FRESHWATER LAKE

Boeri Lake and Freshwater Lake can be reached via a hiking trail that starts at the village of Laudat. The hike is moderately challenging and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and vegetation.

Within the rainforest and steep valley there are numerous waterfalls Here are some of the main attractions:

Trafalgar Falls:

Located in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Trafalgar Falls is one of Dominica’s most famous waterfalls. It consists of two cascades: the taller one called the “Father” and the shorter one known as the “Mother.” Visitors can hike to the falls and enjoy the natural hot springs nearby.

Middleham Falls:

This breathtaking waterfall is situated in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park as well. It is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Caribbean, plunging approximately 200 feet (61 meters) into a deep pool. The hike to Middleham Falls offers an opportunity to explore Dominica’s lush rainforest.

Victoria Falls:

Located in the northeastern part of Dominica, Victoria Falls is a beautiful waterfall accessible by a short hike from the village of Delices. It cascades into a large pool, surrounded by lush vegetation. The area is also known for its scenic rivers and hiking trails.

Emerald Pool:  is a stunning natural attraction in Dominica. It features a crystal-clear pool fed by a small waterfall surrounded by vibrant greenery. It is easily accessible, making it a popular spot for swimming and relaxation.

Jacko Falls:

Situated in the Layou Valley, Jacko Falls is a picturesque waterfall that offers a tranquil setting. The cascading water flows into a refreshing pool, making it a great spot for swimming and picnicking. The waterfall is located near the village of Sylvania.

Chaudiere Pool:

The pool is a lovely spot for swimming and jumping off the 20-foot rock. It’s located in the north east of the Island in the village of Bense.

Cabrits National Park:

Located at the northern top of the island is the Cabrits National Park. A tourist attraction located within the park is Fort Shirley with fantastic views of the Portsmouth Coastline. Various trails to the top of the hill lead to Fort Shirley Commandant’s Quarters, Bluff Point Gun Battery and Douglas Bay Battery. The park has a variety of wildlife ground lizard, tree lizard or  Zanndoli, grove snake, Antillean crested hummingbird and red-necked pigeon.

Also located in the Portsmouth area are guided boat tours to Indian River. The experienced guides provide visitors information about the river’s ecosystem, flora and fauna. Visitors can observe the diverse wildlife, including birds, crabs and fish as well as the unique vegetation along the 3.2 kilometres riverbanks. 

SCOTT’S HEAD POINT

At the southwestern part of the island there is a volcanic formation known as Scotts Head Point. The narrow strip of land separates the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean and it is a popular spot for photography. A short hike to the top of Scott’s head offer breathing sceneries of the surrounding landscape. The Waitukubuli National Trail starts from Scotts Head Village and is the longest hiking trail in the Caribbean spanning 185 kilometres (115 miles). The trail is divided into 14 segments and it will take an average of 7 days to complete. 

Dominicans keep their eco-destinations clean and liter free. They understand the importance of preserving their heritage.

To hike the trails in Dominica, visitors need to purchase a permit from the Forestry and Wildlife Department and the cost for a week activity is US 12 dollars.
