The highly anticipated book launch of A Sense of Arrival by Kevin Adonis Browne will take place at Medulla Art Gallery in Woodbrook, Port of Spain, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 6:30pm.

The launch will feature readings by the author and special guests Wendell Manwarren of 3 Canal; Jamie J. Philbert of Bois Academy; poets Shivanee Ramlochan (Everyone Knows I am a Haunting, 2017) and Alexandra Stewart (Offstage, 2020); Steffano Marcano of Next Level Devils, who was featured in Browne’s High Mas (2019); and Mel Gabriel of Caribbean LookBook, whose portraits are featured in this latest book.

In A Sense of Arrival, published by Duke University Press, Browne presents a groundbreaking narrative of Caribbean blackness, blending essays, memoir, autotheory, and narrative verse with diverse visual media, including documentary photography, portraiture, and his own art installations. Browne examines the concept of arrival as a complex theory of being. Through this multimodal approach, he explores themes such as belonging, exile, love, loss, and the haunting presence of the Caribbean diaspora.

Browne’s work challenges readers to look beyond the dominant narratives of black death and instead embrace the optimism, beauty, and depth inherent in the experience of arrival. This meditation on Caribbeanness invites audiences to reconsider the ways in which the black Caribbean self comes into being, shaping an understanding of identity and existence that is as multifaceted and layered as the Caribbean itself.

Kevin Adonis Browne, PhD is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Writing at Syracuse University and the author of several influential works on Caribbean culture and black rhetoric, including High Mas: Carnival and the Poetics of Caribbean Culture (winner of the OCM Bocas Prize in Caribbean Literature, 2019) and Tropic Tendencies: Rhetoric, Popular Culture, and the Anglophone Caribbean.

As the creator of The No Words Project and co-founder of the Caribbean Memory Project, Browne’s contributions to both academic scholarship and Caribbean culture are widely recognized.

This is a must-attend event for anyone interested in Caribbean literature, art, and culture. Join Kevin Adonis Browne and special guests for an unforgettable evening that explores the multifaceted and evolving concept of arrival within the Caribbean experience.

An exhibition of artwork featured in the book will run at Medulla Art Gallery until April 23, 2025.
