The life of one of T& T’s most successful entrepreneurs in New York will be honoured in this year’s Labour Day Celebrations.
New York-based organizations (Hometown Studios, Brooklyn Kaiso House, Culture Best
Promotions, and Caribbean People Newspaper) have joined forces with the aim of honouring and preserving the legacy of a cherished icon from Trinidad and Tobago. This individual holds a significant position in the realm of music and stands as a trailblazer in the calypso industry. Through their collaborative efforts, these organizations are committed to paying tribute to this enduring
figure and ensuring their continued relevance.
Recognized for numerous years as the “architect of melodies,” Rawlston Charles, affectionately referred to as Charlie’s, has left an indelible mark on the music landscape. Another luminary to be celebrated is the esteemed Lord Nelson.
Commencing from August 31st until September 2nd, this three-day commemorative affair is set to unfold at the Billie Holiday Theatre, nestled at 1368 Fulton Street in Brooklyn. Regarded as the highly awaited precursor to Labor Day 2023, these shows commence at 8pm with an advance admission fee of $60 USD.
Coinciding with Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence Day, colloquially dubbed “Throwback Thursday,” DJs and artists will unite to deliver renditions of timeless tracks from the repertoire of illustrious musicians nurtured by Charlie. Backed by the harmonious strains of the Hometown Squad, the
performers will grace the stage, guided by the masterful hosting of Errol Fabien. Charlie’s production prowess has nurtured a myriad of distinguished calypso artists, such as Kitchener, Sparrow, Rose, Lord Melody, Mercant, Explainer, Shorty Francine, Swallow, Stalin, Winston Soso, Maestro, Duke, and
Spoiler.
Charlie was born and raised in the remote village of Delaford Tobago, where at the time nothing was going on. In pursuit of broader horizons, young Charlie, driven by his ambition, ventured away from his Tobago home in search of opportunities. He worked at Neal and Massy where he learned skills in auto mechanics. During the 1960s, the United States beckoned for skilled craftsmen, and Charlie embraced the chance, setting his sights on America and
securing a position at Ford.
Yet, the realm of music held Charlie’s true passion. It was this eagerness that prompted him to establish a record store. With the surge of Caribbean migration to the USA, a demand emerged for calypso records. At that juncture, there was a void in distributing calypso music to the American market, compounded by the need to enhance the recording quality for overseas listeners. Charlie recognized this gap and became the catalyst for Calypso artists to not only have their music recorded but also to penetrate the North American market, securing their place on the musical stage.
During the second evening, which falls on Friday, September 1st, a spectacular Kaiso Night will unfold. The stage will come alive with captivating performances by esteemed artists like Crazy, Rikki Jai, and the show’s headliner, Poser. Adding to the lineup, the reigning National Calypso King of Trinidad and Tobago, Duane O’Connor, and Queen Tameka Darius will grace the stage with their exceptional talents.
The night’s ensemble will also include appearances by Quiet Prince, Virtuoso, Prince Unique, Scorcha Fyah, along with the rhythmic tunes spun by DJs Eddie D & Casper, and the mesmerizing sounds of Hypnotic Soundz. Guiding the proceedings with his expertise, Errol Fabien will be the master of ceremonies, while Cindy Ann Boisson, a Trinidadian comedienne based in Florida, will infuse
the event with humour and laughter.
During the evening of Saturday 2nd September, in honour of the illustrious Lord Nelson, a roster of exceptional artists, including Ajala, Mr. Lonesome, Lennox Picou, Benji C, Sugar Man, Dance Master, Judy Henry, and the UK’s Kow, will grace the stage. Among the distinguished guests, Tuco’s executive
member Twiggy will also be present, alongside the event’s master of ceremonies, Errol Fabien.
At the vibrant age of 92, Lord Nelson, who celebrated his birthday on July 29th, continues to fascinate audiences with his performances, holding a position of high esteem within the calypso and soca
community. The evening is dedicated to acknowledging his remarkable contributions to the calypso industry.
Among Lord Nelson’s enduring hits such as “Meh Lover,” “Disco Daddy,” “Lala,” “We Like It,” “One Family,” and “King Lair,” this multi-award-winning artist has bestowed upon the world a rich array of calypsos, infused with motivation, education, entertainment, and a distinct showcase of showmanship. The promoter has underlined the importance of honouring Lord Nelson, emphasizing that his enduring significance as a role model and a cherished figure remains steadfast.
