The ‘Mother of all Carnivals’ will come alive on the road, for Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Never have there been so many exceptional songs contending for the Road March Title.
Over six hundred new releases have been fighting to gain popularity in just two months. With so little time to play so many songs, lots of good music will be thrown by the wayside. In addition, preference is always given to big names and established artists.
After the carnival mainstream radio goes back to its regular format of foreign music and the hype behind the local music is lost. There is no desire to create after carnival hits.
Despite this, the cream of the crop is decided by the partygoers. With so many outstanding selections masqueraders are sure to have the fun time of their lives. The judges will surely have a hard time compiling the Road March.
At the top of the list is Bunji Garlin with“Hard Fete”. This song is mashing up the fetes and shows no signs of dropping out from the top position. Bunji with so many hits under his belt for 2023 is unquestionably the top soca artist. Some of his other hits are Umbrella, Position, Bottle, On the Cooler featuring Bounty Killer and Mud featuring Jus Now.
Another powerful Roadmarch contender is the Strange Things Riddim with Bunji Garlin’s “The Stage Agan” and Fayann Lyons with “Stage is Yuh Name”. These two songs will drive masqueraders crazy.
Nailah Blackman and Skinny Fabulous – Come Home is also a huge favourite with the crowd. This song is so massive that the crowd actually sings the track for Nailah. It is right on the heels of Bunji and only time will tell if it will be in the No#1 position.

Machel Montano has two tracks in the Road March race. “Like Yourself” featuring Patrice Roberts and “Shake the Place” feat Destra. These songs are gaining momentum and by Carnival Tuesday they have the potential to be favourites on the road.
Machel is exceptionally skilful in producing classic songs for the road. Of the two tracks “like yourself” has the stronger singalong chorus however, “Shake the Place” is jam-packed with lots of energy.
Other songs that will be favourites on the road, to name a few are Engine Room- Olatunji, Long Live Soca – Voice, Drink and Fete-Viking Ding Dong, Mas – Mical Teja, and Freetown Collective.
To the man on the street, the music took a little while to grow, but it has come alive to produce “the mother of all carnivals”.
