A Soca splash in the midst of the R&B Brunch last Saturday resulted in a surge of energy and excitement as Scorch Radio and The Air Committee hosted the second installment of the R&B Brunch Festival series at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain. The arena opposite to Queens Royal College was transformed into a oasis of decadent brunch treats and cocktails, alongside a vibrant fusion of Caribbean and international music. One of the event’s biggest moments came when soca star Aaron “Voice” St Louis joined American R&B icon Ashanti onstage for a surprise appearance that instantly electrified the gathering of several thousand patrons.

To be sure, the crowd erupted as Voice emerged midway through Ashanti’s set, bringing unmistakable Caribbean energy to the international showcase and creating one of the night’s loudest audience reactions. The pair performed together in a moment that immediately sparked speculation among patrons about a possible official collaboration or remix between the Trinidad and Tobago hitmaker and the Grammy-winning singer.

Ashanti, who openly embraced Trinidad throughout the evening, appeared comfortable engaging local audiences and performers, frequently smiling, interacting with patrons, and praising the country’s culture and energy.

“Trinidad is like my second home,” she told the audience at one point, while also expressing her love for soca music.

Voice’s appearance further highlighted the growing musical relationship between Caribbean genres and mainstream international acts. The crossover moment felt natural inside the Savannah atmosphere, where soca, dancehall, R&B and hip-hop loving audiences blended seamlessly throughout the night.

While American rapper JA Rule and Ashanti remained the headline attractions, Caribbean performers consistently ignited the crowd and maintained the event’s momentum.

Dancehall star, Valiant delivered one of the evening’s more energetic performances also, while local acts Kimi, Kimba Sorzano, Tevin Hartman, Preedy, Erphaan Alves and Arielle Cowie helped establish the concert’s distinctly Caribbean tone from early.

Female patrons particularly embraced Ashanti’s nostalgic set, singing along passionately to several of her early 2000s hits and collaborations with Ja Rule that helped define an era of R&B and hip-hop culture.

The crowd response intensified whenever Caribbean rhythms entered the playlist, reinforcing the influence of soca and dancehall within Trinidad and Tobago’s entertainment space even during internationally branded events.

The successful integration of local and foreign talent also continued conversations about the importance of Caribbean artists sharing major stages with international acts rather than simply opening shows.

Patrons appeared especially responsive to moments where the genres blended organically, with Voice’s surprise appearance standing out as the clearest example of the cultural synergy many attendees praised after the event.

By the end of the night, the second edition of R&B Brunch once again demonstrated Trinidad and Tobago audiences’ appetite for international concerts that still maintain strong Caribbean identity and representation.

With the reaction generated by Voice and Ashanti’s unexpected link-up, many patrons left wondering whether Saturday night may have also planted the seeds for future musical collaborations. Voice’s manager, Lyndon Gomez told XVibes that the collaboration is still in the works with no release date yet set, but that the team was “pleased with the positive response received” on Saturday.
