Now in its fifth year, Tobago Carnival is once again taking over the sunny island, as thousands of visitors from both Trinidad and abroad converge on Tobago for what has quickly become one of the most anticipated events on the entertainment calendar. And from the moment you arrive, you can feel that something is happening. Caribbean Airlines is definitely doing its best to facilitate the increased movement of passengers with additional flights, alongside the ferry services bringing scores more visitors across to the island.
Flying into the newly opened ANR Robinson International Airport also adds something special to the arrival experience. Recently officially opened by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, the airport offers visitors an immediate taste of Tobago through its décor and choice of artistry. From the goat-racing mural to the words that perhaps best describe Tobago — “The Greatest Little Island on the Planet” — proudly displayed as you enter, there is a genuinely welcoming feeling. In my view, that slogan should be officially adopted for Tobago tourism — and maybe even placed proudly on the tail of an aircraft. But anyway, back to Carnival!
Both Fog Angels mas camps were a buzz of activity as masqueraders and visitors arrived to collect their packages and costumes, and even a sudden downpour could not stop the vibes. The energy is high, the trucks are ready and the road is calling. Iconic Mas trucks were already seen surveying the roads, well decorated and proudly displaying the band’s partnership with Hennessy, while, not to be outdone, Fog Angels is also set and ready for the Carnival action.

Friends Malika Murchison, Daciann Mardenborough, Bryana Augustine and Alvina Douglas were among those soaking up the atmosphere, boasting about the excellent service they had already received from the Fog Angels team. As first-time masqueraders, the four said they were excited and looking forward to hitting the road and experiencing Tobago Carnival for themselves. And judging from their excitement, there was really only one way to end the conversation. “We’re in Tobago… where are you?” they screamed, laughing. And just like that, Tobago Carnival has begun.
