After a brief break amidst the pandemic, the birth of his first-born son, and fresh off his JUNO nomination for Best Jazz Album of the Year, Jesse Ryan is ready to share an incredibly intimate part of himself. In his new single “The Night Before She Passed” released on June 27th (on all streaming platforms), Jesse honors his late mother Margaret and openly expresses themes of loss, grief, apathy, hope, and the beauty of courageously facing adversity, as he reflects on his mother’s brief and turbulent battle with cancer. The single is currently featured on the State of Jazz, and Jazz Fresh Finds’ Spotify playlistswith Jesse taking the top spot, gracing its cover.

Ryan reflects on and thoughtfully communicates his emotions through each section of “The Night Before She Passed”. The piece opens with a stripped-back piano intro that sets a tone of melancholic reflection- a feeling of loss and grief that moves into a buoyant hopefulness as the main theme enters. The music takes a turn as an air of turbulence, representing the theme of courageously facing adversity, is beautifully conveyed through the heartfelt melody, harmonic tension, and driving groove. As listeners are led into the C-section, the cyclical sound of the main ostinato mimics Jesse’s thoughts spinning out of control. This musical journey is cathartic, delicately intertwining feelings of loss and hopefulness
The composition intends to create a space for everyone that hears it to reflect on their own experiences with losing a loved-one, to process their own grief, and find healing, hope, and experience the beauty of life in the face of adversity.
Jesse is a JUNO-nominated jazz saxophonist, and composer from Trinidad and Tobago, currently living in Toronto, with a keen interest in the connections between jazz and Afro-Caribbean musical traditions. Ryan’s debut album Bridges was nominated for a JUNO award earlier this year, and he was also the recipient of the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Jazz Artist Award in 2020.
Jesse has honed his skills through his studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Humber College in Toronto, and Vermont College of Fine Arts, studying and performing with Jon Gordon, Roberto Occhipinti, Larnell Lewis, and many more. Jesse’s curiosity about the saxophone, and musical development inspiring a new creative journey with his exciting podcast “Keep Taking Ground” featuring conversations with in-demand, award-winning saxophonists world-wide, and across jazz, and contemporary styles. Jesse is also a P. Mauriat America artist, and their exclusive horns player.
